The 4th of July

Well, this was the weirdest 4th of July ever.  Without any of the normal 4th of July activities, it kindof just felt like another weekend...

On Friday we were all home, but we're having some work done on our house, which involves a plumber being under our house.  I didn't actually know he was coming until I suddenly heard a drill under our house.  Gabe was very confused, so I told him to go over to the vent and say hello.  He did, and then a voice came from under the house saying hello.  Gabe said "Where are you?"  He responded with "Under here."  Gabe was very confused.  "Under the ground?"  Then he told me that he needed go outside and look around the house to find the hole that he had dug to get under the house.  Funny, he looked, but couldn't find the hole.  Somehow I think we should not tell him how he actually got under the house...

Friday night we went over to Aunt Jan's house.  There may not have actually been any fireworks, but we decided to get together like always and sit outside and roast hot dogs.  It actually was convenient that there weren't any fireworks because it meant that we could leave at 7:30 and get Josy to bed at a reasonable hour, rather than trying to convince him to sleep at Aunt Jan's house until midnight.

Gabe found an old phone in all of Aunt Jan's toys and thought it was wonderful.  He carried it around all evening in his pants, used the phrase "be quiet, I'm on the phone!" and I had to repeatedly tell him to "put the phone down and eat your dinner."  I really thought I'd have a few more years before I'd have to deal with that...

After we got home and the boys were in bed, I went on a run.  It was lovely!  Since everyone had bought their own fireworks and were shooting them off, I actually got a pretty good fireworks show while I ran.

Saturday, since we didn't have a parade to go to, we decided to hike out to Boyscout Beach.  It was lovely.  The weather was great and it was so nice to just sit outside and let the boys play.  It was the first time that Josy got to just crawl around in the sand and play with all of the random things he could find.  We definitely got to have a lot of conversations about not putting rocks and sand and sticks and things in his mouth, but it was fun to get to watch him explore his world a little bit.

We found a pirate flag on the beach and Gabe was thrilled. That means that “there’s a real pirate in town!!!”

Gabe has been asking to climb a mountain for months.  Since we still aren't having church and the weather was nice, we decided to let him try.  I really thought that we'd only make it part way up, but that kid is amazing and hiked all the way up to the tram.  Sure, we had to have a lot of conversations about not running, not walking backwards towards cliffs and not touching random plants along the way, but he did amazing, particularly considering the fact that his legs are so much shorter that ours.  It may have really only been three miles, but it was probably the equivalent of a half marathon to those little legs.  Sure, he was so tired on the way down that I had to hold his hand to keep him from running and tripping off a cliff, but we made it all down and I'm incredibly proud of him.
