Kona
I’m sitting in the airport in Kona, waiting for our flight home. So far Gabe is two hours past his bedtime and he didn’t get to nap today since we had to check out of our condo at 10, so he’s walking around like he’s drunk and randomly falling over. It would be entertaining if I wasn’t so read to go to sleep myself... Anyway, we’ve been here a week and I haven’t written hardly anything, so now I get to catch up.
The volcano has completely stopped erupting (at least above ground), so we didn’t get to see lava or anything, but there’s not a lot we can do about that.
On Wednesday we were pretty wiped out from our long day of driving, so we stayed close to the condo, going to the farmer’s market and getting Dole Whip.
On Thursday we drove up north to a bay whose name I can’t pronounce or spell, but we spent a long time playing on the beach. Gabe also chased a lot of birds. I think he’s convinced he’ll catch one eventually.
After lunch we let Bella wander Claire’s. While we were waiting, Gabe decided to prove once again that he is the sweetest little boy. He would run to the other side of the grass. Then he’d run back to me, put one hand on each shoulder and give me a big kiss. Then he’d run off again, starting the cycle over.
On Friday we drove back up to play with the dolphins. Unfortunately once we got there we discovered it was crazy expensive, so we decided against that one. We did get to see them, though, which Gabe thought was great.
From there we found another beach to play at. The surf was too big to go in much past our knees (since we’re not really good boogie boarders...), so we just played on the beach.
Later Gabe decided to practice his boogie boarding at the condo...
And today we ran some errands and got ready to go home. It’s been a good trip, but it’s time to go home.
We flew in late Sunday night and got our rental car, ate some dinner and went to bed.
Monday we found a beach and played for awhile. Then by the time we got a very late lunch and Gabe got a nap, that pretty much took up our entire day...
On Tuesday we decided to drive up to Volcano National Park. The drive across the island was absolutely amazing. The sheer quantities of different terrains is crazy. No wonder Hawaii is so popular for filming movies...
The park itself was a bit of a letdown. Between the eruption a few months ago and the government shutdown, not much of the park was open. Then again, I wasn’t supposed to be walking and we have a three year old, so it was kindof okay that we couldn’t explore the whole thing.

Afterwards, we decided to go around the south of the island so we could see the black sand beach and the turtles. That was really cool. The waves were crazy enough that I wouldn’t want to be in the water, but it looked really cool.
