4th of July
We continued our 4th of July tradition of going to see the fireworks on the 3rd at Aunt Jan’s house. There was no way we could miss it, Josy would have been devastated! He’s been asking about it for months and the other day Aunt Jan came to our house for dinner. The next morning he woke up in tears because “we missed the fireworks!!” No. We did not. They just hasn’t happened yet.
This year, no one got sick, which helped a lot! But this is also the only picture I took. Poor Gabe was so wiped out that I’m surprised he made it until midnight. He’d hiked up one of trails up into the mountains, a six mile hike, while following a bunch of kids that were significant bigger than he was. He did great, but it was a lot of work to keep up. The kid was exhausted…
A couple of months (or years? I lost track) ago, we were at an airport and Gabe found the bin of free books. Naturally he had to dig through and he found a book about a kid that was trying to figure out what George Washington ate for breakfast. Naturally, he was intrigued and started begging us to make him Mush Cakes, which the kid determined was what George Washington ate. I don’t know why we didn’t make it then, I’m going to blame life being crazy. Well, on the 3rd, Gabe suddenly announced that “Mom, you have up make me George Washington’s breakfast for the 4th of July!!” So, I got up before everyone else and made Mush Cakes for Gabe.
I had a very happy little boy.
But only for a moment, because it turns out that he doesn’t like Mush Cakes. We did not discover a new 4th of July tradition…
After breakfast, we went to the parade. We got there nice and early to save a space for all the people joining us.
This is the only actual parade picture that I got. Gabe and the other two were super excited about the candy and did a good job of getting it all, but also not hanging out in the middle of the street. Josy was more apprehensive. He liked it, but he wasn’t running into the road for candy, which, let’s face it, I’m okay with. My friends son was very kind and handed him some things.
Then we headed home and both boys took a nap. It was very clear that that’s what needed to happen. Then Gram and Gramps came over and Pat made smashburgers. It was a lovely way to celebrate the 4th of July.
