A First for Us

We had quite the day on Friday. The plan was to go downtown and have lunch. That was literally the only plan. But we all know what they say about the best laid plans...

Seth and Bryson showed up over here mid-morning. My parents’ washing machine quit, so he needed to do laundry and we let the boys play. I was on the phone dealing with insurance stuff when I heard a thud and Seth came down the stairs holding Gabe with a washcloth stuck to his forehead. Gabe had been playing in the bathtub and slipped and hit his head on the faucet.

We got the bleeding to stop and after looking at it further, decided that this one might need stitches. I sent a picture to the doctors office and they agreed, so we picked up Gram and headed to the doctor.

They got Gabe’s head all cleaned up and decided that it wasn’t very deep and he probably just needed some steristrips. However, we’re in the middle of a heatwave and they couldn’t get the steristrips to stick to his sweaty head. Instead, they superglued it shut and all was well. My brave son was a complete rockstar and handled everything so well. He literally cried for about a minute when it happened, but that was it.

After the doctor, we made it downtown to have lunch with Gramps and Great Gram. After lunch we got a special treat, because I promised him a treat for being so brave.

After ice cream, we went home and all fell asleep. When Gabe woke up 2.5 hours later, I looked at his head and realized that he’s pulled up the super glue. It was half attached to his head, and half not. Lovely. I called the doctor again, not sure what I was supposed to do with it. She actually drove out to our house to look at it and said that the glue was no longer holding the cut closed and it was up to us if we wanted to stitch it closed or not.

We ended up deciding that our little crazy monkey was going to split it open again, which meant that stitches were our best option. Just telling him not to mess with it wasn’t going to work, so we headed to the ER, which is exactly where you want to go on a sunny Friday night. Luckily there wasn’t too much ER craziness while we were there.

Gabe did great. I am continually amazed by that kid. Sure, he was wiggly, but he was bored and an hour passed his bedtime, so that wasn’t really a shock. But he was happy and not scared at all. They did give him a shot, which he did not like at all, to sedate him so that they could deal with his head. That part freaked all of us out. There are not words to describe what it’s like seeing your kid in that state. It was pretty bad.

The doctor got the glue off and put in 5 stitches. Then Gabe just had to wake back up, which was also an adventure. Once he came off of it and could talk, he was hilarious. He was convinced that we were on a helicopter since the room was spinning and kept telling everyone all about the helicopter and the bottons. He also really wanted to sit up, but every time he tried, he’d flop over like a baby, since he had the head control of an infant.

We made it home and now four days later he still hasn’t picked them out, so we made the right call. And the thing that Gabe keeps talking about from the hospital? When we walked out, it was dark. Silly kid.
