The NICU. Again. Part 4

Pat and I spent the night at the NICU Tuesday night so we could work on breastfeeding. The breastfeeding part went well. The sleeping part didn’t, partly become I had to feed him every three hours, but also because Pat and I were sharing a single pull out couch...

Since we were already at the NICU Wednesday morning, it made it easy to meet up with Bjorn’s family for breakfast. They just happened to be presenting at a conference that morning in the hospital, the exact day that we happened to be up there with Josiah. It’s so great to catch up with friends who understand exactly what you’re walking through.

Eating was going so well for Josiah that we decided that we needed to run all of the errands that we still needed to do, so we spent the afternoon shopping, until the previous night had caught up with us and we all needed naps. Then we met up with Teresa for dinner before heading back to the NICU for the night.

That night Josiah got his last dose of antibiotics, which meant that they could pull his iv. They also did his carseat test and his hearing test. At about 6, we had a long chat with the doctor and he said that we could take him home. So Pat and I got some breakfast, met up for coffee a friend from home whose twin girls are in the NICU, finished discharge paperwork, packed our stuff and took our son home. Well, at least we took him back to Uncle Tim’s house...

The rest of the afternoon was a blur. Uncle Tim got in some Josiah snuggles. We met Pat’s parents for lunch. We packed up our stuff at Uncle Tim’s house and then we headed to the airport and caught the evening flight home.

This week has been one of the craziest weeks of our lives. Not the craziest, but probably in the top 5. In one week we went from prepping for a scheduled csection with absolutely no known problems to walking in the house with our son after a six day stint in the NICU. It’ll be a long time before my head has had a chance to process the entire week.

But for now, we’re home. And very happy to be home.
