Josy’s Birthday

Today is Josy’s birthday. How on earth is he three also? It seems like he was just a little tiny baby and more he’s a potty trained preschooler.

We’ve only been here three days, but so far it’s rained every day. No worries, we’re still determined to make the best of it, so we decided to go swim in the cenotes this morning. We figured that Josy would like that and we could do that regardless of the weather.

Um, things didn’t go as planned…

First of all, the boys didn’t go to sleep last night, so they were very tired this morning. That did not help. But we got in the van and got to the cenotes and started the tour and it was great, right until we got in the cave and started into the water off the first cenote. Then Gabe started panicking, demanding that we go back to the hotel right now. Josy started screaming that it was cold. So we’re swimming through an underground river, inside a cavern with six other people and the boys were both screaming bloody murder. Lets just say that we were all happy to get to the other side.

Then as we left the first cenote, it started raining. And by raining, I mean monsooning. There is a hurricane on the other side of the country and we are feeling the edges of that storm. When we got in the next cenote, it was raining so hard that the raindrops were bouncing up. Josy was not happy. At all. Gabe was also complaining, but he was doing okay.

By the third one, all Josy could do was cry. “Me cold! Me cold! No happy birthday!” I tried convincing him that he’d be warmer in the water, but it did not work. He was not having it.

It was so bad that we shipped the last one. I think the rest of our tour group was probably happy to see us leave. They had a much more peaceful last cenote.

But we still had to walk through the rain to get back to the front. And everyone was hungry, but the restaurant was closed because of the rain. It was 11:30 and our return van wasn’t going to show up until 3, so we headed down to the road to get a colectivo, the public transportation. But a taxi saw us and had pitty on the family walking around in the monsoon with the baby  wrapped up in a soaking wet towel and offered us a ride. We took it, even though it was a pretty expensive ride.

We got back to our condo, put on warm dry clothes and life was definitely better. Lunch helped also, and then some of us napped. We may still also have some jet lag going on…

Josy also opened some presents.

Once Josy was awake, we asked him where he wanted to go for dinner.

P: Josy, what do you want for your birthday dinner?
J: Nufing.
P: Do you want pizza?
J: No fanks.

We picked pizza anyway, and then he decided he wanted noodles and ate four of them.

On our way to get ice cream, the boys met a money. That may have made up for the entire day.

Then we got birthday ice cream. So I think he had a good birthday after all.
