Day 5: Pirates

When we were trying to decide where to go on vacation, Pat and I did some googling and found that Cancun had a pirate cruise. And that was it. We stopped looking at other places and booked plane tickets to Cancun.

Of course, we didn’t tell the boys. Instead I made sure to pack some pirates shirts, even though Gabe told me that he didn’t want to bring anything piraty and didn’t want to bring those shirts. I packed them anyway.

And today was the day. Lets just say that is a good thing that we didn’t tell the boys about it ahead of time, because for the number of questions we had to answer in just one day, I can’t imagine how bad it would be if we’d had weeks or months to talk about it…

We decided to have a low key morning, knowing full well that it was going to be an exciting evening. Plus, the weather was finally better, so we went to the beach to dig in the sand. Gabe desperately wanted to play in the water, but the storm washed up so much sea weed, that they were removed it with a backhoe, so swimming was definitely not going to happen.

Silly kid did not want to take a picture with me!

We got churros, which were very popular, in spite of the scowls.

Daddy tried to steal a bite of Josy’s. He was not impressed.

Eventually, we headed back to the mall for a bathroom break and then headed to lunch.

After lunch, the boys were supposed to be taking long naps. That did not happen. But there wasn’t much I could do about that. Instead, they changed into their pirate shirts early.

Then we got in the van and headed to the dock.

It had a cover over the deck because it was raining. As soon as it stopped, they pulled the cover back, which was nice. But they pulled the cover on and off three times because the weather couldn’t decide if it was going to rain or not.

The captain

Gabe was instantly pulled away for some new makeup.

They pulled him up on the deck to shoes off his makeup to the whole ship.

We were not the only pirate cruise…

At the beginning, Gabe was terrified. The pirates were shooting guns that he was pretty sure were real and he was concerned they were going to hurt someone. Plus, they were flying a Jolly Roger, so he was concerned about the navy trying to sink us. But as the evening progressed, he relaxed and by the end he was having so much fun, he could hardly contain himself.

At one point, we got locked in the brig.

After a dance party, we headed below deck for dinner and then another pirate show.

It’s hard to see in this picture, but once they found the treasure chest, it could only be opened with help from someone with a pure heart. So they again pulled Gabe up to the front and he had to put his hands in the air in order to help the captain open the treasure. You can just see his little arms in the bottom right.

Once the treasure chest was opened, the curse was broken and the whole ship broke out into another dance party. Gabe danced heartily for one song and then suddenly you could tell that his little body wore out and all he could do was stand there and stare.

Once we got off the boat, we crawled into the van to head back to our house and both boys curled up in their seats and were also within about two minutes.

It was an amazing experience. And Gabe is still taking about it being the best night of his life.

Totally worth it.
