Camping

We went camping last weekend. About six months ago I’d booked this cabin and I’m so glad that I did. I don’t think we could have possibly asked for a better weekend, even though it was ridiculously cold…

We were originally supposed to be going out on Thursday night. Pat and I were going to take the day off of work, we were going to pull Gabe out of school for the day and Bella had plans to stay with a friend so she wouldn’t miss school. However, then Pat had to go out of school for work Monday and Tuesday and I didn’t think there was any way that we could get everything ready to go on Wednesday night so we could go out on Thursday after work. Spoiler alert: I was right. As it was, we spent Wednesday planning food and Thursday cooking and making lists and it still took us long enough on Friday night that we bailed on the barbecue hot dogs plan and I grabbed McDonalds takeout on our way out. Since it was pouring down rain, no one minded being inside the cabin and not outside trying to roast hot dogs by the fire…

But then we woke up on Saturday morning and it was crystal clear and amazingly beautiful. It was also very cold and everything was frozen.

Is there a better view for making breakfast???

We hung out in the cabin for awhile, waiting for it to warm up enough that we could go exploring. No one complained too much. Gabe destroyed Josy and I in Uno.

Then we went exploring.

Eventually we had to come back in to warm up and get some lunch. Then there was some reading time while we attempted to convince Josy to take a nap. It did not work, so Bella took another nap in his place.

Then Pat started working on dinner and the boys and I found the frisbee.

Some friends came out for dinner and we roasted hot dogs and ate a fancy Dutch oven meal that Pat had made. Unfortunately they showed up just as the sun went down and then the temperature crashed, so being outside was hard. But there were six little boys out there and not a single one landed in the river, so I’ll take that as a win. We did lose one frisbee, but if that’s all we lost, then we’re doing great.

We woke up to another very cold day.

But the boys helped me with breakfast.

Then we decided to go on a walk before we started packing things up.

The river erosion is crazy. Gabe’s Princess Sophia obsession started when we were camping here a couple of years ago with Gram and Gramps and Bryson. This year we couldn’t even get to the plaque to read about it. (Actually, that may have been a good thing. Gabe really loves to talk about the Princess Sophia…) I can’t imagine that that cabin will be there too much longer. As it is, ask the trees that used to line the river are now gone. It made for a better view, but we’ll see how long the rest of the bank lasts.

It was a really great weekend. I’m pretty sure we need to do it more often, although I don’t think we’ll ever get as beautiful of a weekend again.
